When do I pop my CDs has a tank? Well if you Solo tank the first Phase like we do it should look like this:
Use Rampart a few seconds after first Stardust, time it so it's up for both Ravensbeak and Raven Blight. Use Foresight a few seconds after first Lunar Dynamo and boss is targetable again, time it so it's up for both Ravensbeak and Raven Blight . Use Rampart a few seconds after "double dives", time it so it's up for both Ravensbeak and Raven Blight then use Sentinel when Raven Blight has 5 sec left. Use Hallowed Ground when Raven Blight has 5 sec left.
Healing Tips: At pull: SCH: X-pot + all 5 DoTs (Shadow Flare, Bio II, Miasma, Bio, Aero), weaving in all 3 charges of Energy Drain. WHM: solo heal first 20 sec, nothing much going on
After it: SCH: Adloquium before Ravensbeak, Adloquium before Raven Blight and Adloquium before Dalamud Dive on tank after Meteor Stream. Safe to DPS during Stardust & Lunar Dynamo. Do not need to Succor on first Thermionic Beam. (Succor will run out before dives) WHM: Stoneskin before Ravensbeak & Raven Blight, time Cure II land just after Ravensbeak and Raven Blight Medica II Thermionic Beam and Double Meteor Stream only.
For single tank method this is something interesting I found.
"our bard just pops all his CDS and only attacks the blue one hes kiting. honestly, if you got 5 dps, you really shouldnt need the bard helping you on the other ones.
also, healers dont really need to heal much during golems, but im guessing your whm medica 2s to get hate from the red. thats what ours does. i think she does it once, while i grab the green one, and the bard unleashes on blue.
keep in mind, our bard initially grabs the red one, because it turns into blue. so MT gets green, bard gets red, healer gets blue. nuke the green, MT grabs the healers one, and the bard ends up with blue, so that he can silence the earthshock when it comes. you shouldnt get a 2nd earthshock either with 5 dps
This fight is DEFINITELY one-tankable and there are DEFINITELY merits to one-tanking this fight (there are merits to two-tanking too, of course).
The only reason nobody has one-tanked it yet (or at least hasn't published a video/screenshot) is because most groups default to two-tanking it. There aren't any huge DPS checks in this fight so people value control over extra damage. It's not like Titan HM or Avatar where one-tank is clearly better than two-tank. It's also not like Twintania where the extra DPS lightens the load, because trading a tank for a DPS introduces an additional DPS race to deal with (with one tank, you now must push Darnus to 47% before a second Dragon spawns).
Here are important things to know if you're deciding between a one-tank or two-tank strategy:
* In Phase One, Ravensbeak is easily manageable as long as healers are aware of the burst that comes from the initial hit and the ensuing explosion. The tank also needs to time their cooldowns to account for both too. Many groups that two-tank this fight still only use one-tank for Phase One.
* In Phase Two, the Green Golem is the only one that actually does damage. It gets picked up by the tank and burned down before they change colors. Healers tank the blue one and a designated DPS takes the red one away. Zerg down the green one. Very simple and straight-forward.
* In Phase Three, the Ghost of Meracydia hits very hard. However, if you're one-tanking it, blowing a LB on the first one (I recommend caster LB, timed early so it hits as soon as the Ghost reaches the MT), the tank shouldn't take very many hits from the Ghost. Because of the increased damage from bringing 5 DPS, you should be able to drop Darnus below 47% before the second Ghost spawns. I'd say this is an absolute must. You should only see one Ghost.
* In Phase Four, Bahamut's Claw is the only major issue here. With one tank, you can't split the damage like you can with two tanks. You're also losing Storm's Path (or Rage of Halone if you're trying this with a Warrior), so you're taking more damage too. Intelligent and pre-planned cooldown usage is a must. Remember that X-Potion of Vitality HQ is an option. Use it early so you can get topped off before Bahamut's Claw goes off. Benediction midway through Bahamut's Claw is another option. Between those, Sentinel, Hallowed Ground (plus your lesser cooldowns), you should be able to survive Bahamut's Claws with one tank. Your healers should be used to landing a heal between the Claws. An Adloq into Lustrate mid-Claws is really helpful.
** Darnus' usage of Bahamut's Claw is always 45 or 52 seconds apart.
* Our first kill had six Bahamut's Claws (not counting the mini Claws in Phase 3). We had a Bard die at one point. Im confident that with 5 DPS and minimal deaths, you can do it in five Claws.
My group did it with two tanks. We never found a reason to go to one tank. However, another group I know is trying it with one tank. Long story short, their Warrior quit the game. They replaced him with a DPS instead of another Tank, and just having someone play Tank alt for T6 and T7. They've made it to Divebombs, so the only thing standing in their way is handling Bahamut's Claws, which is mathematically possible and a completely reasonable task for a skilled tank and skilled healers.
